Summer Safety Tips for Seniors: Staying Cool, Comfortable & Cared For

Why Summer Safety Matters for Seniors

Arizona summers can be beautiful, but they also bring extreme heat and for older adults, this can pose serious health risks. As we age, our bodies respond differently to temperature changes. Seniors may not feel thirst as easily, may take medications that affect body temperature regulation, and may already be managing chronic health conditions.

That’s why it’s so important to take proactive steps to keep aging loved ones safe, cool, and cared for during the hottest months of the year.

"Staying cool, one sip at a time. Summer wellness starts with simple steps like staying hydrated. Let’s care for our elders together."

1. Encourage Regular Hydration

Dehydration is one of the biggest risks for seniors in summer. Even if they don’t feel thirsty, older adults should be sipping water consistently throughout the day. Keep a refillable water bottle nearby, add fresh fruits or herbs for flavor, or offer hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumbers.

Tip: If your loved one is on fluid restrictions, talk with their healthcare provider for guidance.

2. Keep the Home Cool

Many seniors are sensitive to air conditioning or may avoid using it due to concerns about cost. Help them stay safe by ensuring their home stays at a comfortable temperature ideally between 72–78°F.

Ideas to Help:

  • Use fans in well-ventilated rooms

  • Close curtains during peak sun hours

  • Install weather-stripping to keep cool air in

3. Dress for the Weather

Encourage light, breathable clothing in natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Avoid heavy or dark-colored clothes, which can trap heat. And don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when heading outside!

4. Rethink the Routine

If your loved one enjoys daily walks or gardening, schedule these activities during the cooler hour's early morning or evening. Avoid outdoor chores from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when UV rays and heat levels are at their peak.

5. Check in Frequently

Whether you’re nearby or miles away, consistent check-ins provide reassurance and safety. A quick phone call, video chat, or visit can go a long way in spotting early signs of heat exhaustion, such as confusion, fatigue, or dizziness.
